Instagram Stories are easy to post and just as easy to remove—most of the time. If a story is still within its 24-hour window, or if it has already been saved to your archive or added to a Highlight, the steps are slightly different. This guide shows you how to delete a Story and what to check when Instagram won’t let you remove it.
How to Delete an Active Instagram Story
If the Story is still live on your profile, you can delete it directly from the Story itself or from your profile page.
- Open Instagram and go to your profile or tap your active Story at the top of the app.
- If you are viewing the Story, tap the three dots in the lower-right corner.
- Select Delete, then confirm when prompted.
- If you are on your profile, tap your profile picture to open the Story and use the same three-dot menu.
How to Delete a Story from Your Archive
If you have Story Archive turned on, Instagram saves your expired Stories privately. You can delete them from the archive if you do not want them stored there.
- Open your Instagram profile and tap the menu button in the top-right corner.
- Choose Archive.
- Make sure you are viewing Story Archive, not Posts Archive.
- Open the Story you want to remove.
- Tap the three dots and choose Delete.
How to Delete a Story from a Highlight
If you added a Story to a Highlight, deleting the original Story does not always remove it from the Highlight. You need to remove it separately.
- Go to your Instagram profile.
- Open the Highlight that contains the Story.
- Find the Story slide you want to remove.
- Tap More or the three-dot menu and choose Remove from Highlight or Delete from Highlight, depending on the app version.
What to Do if You Can’t Delete a Story
If the Delete option is missing, greyed out, or nothing happens when you tap it, the problem is usually related to where the Story is stored, the app itself, or your account state.
- You are trying to delete an expired Story from the wrong section of the app.
- The Story is in a Highlight, not just in your live Story.
- Instagram is having a temporary app or server issue.
- The app is outdated and the menu is not working correctly.
- Your account has a restriction or temporary glitch.
- You are viewing the Story through a different interface, such as Archive, where the delete path is different.
Check Whether the Story Is Still Active
A live Story and an archived Story are handled in different places. If the Story has already expired, you may not see the same delete controls you saw while it was active.
Try Deleting It from the Correct Place
If the Story is no longer live, deleting it from the active Story screen will not work because it is no longer there. Use Archive for expired Stories and Highlights for saved Story posts.
Update the Instagram App
An outdated app can cause menu options to disappear or fail to respond. Updating Instagram can fix problems with Story controls and other profile features.
- Open the App Store or Google Play Store.
- Search for Instagram.
- Install any available update.
- Reopen the app and try deleting the Story again.
Check Your Connection and Try Again
If Instagram is not loading properly, the delete action may not complete. A weak or unstable connection can cause menus to freeze or actions to fail without an obvious error message.
Remove the Story from a Highlight Instead
If the Story can still be seen on your profile inside a Highlight, deleting the original Story will not remove that saved copy. You need to edit the Highlight directly.
Log Out and Back In if the App Seems Glitched
Sometimes Instagram can behave incorrectly on one session even though the account itself is fine. Logging out and back in can refresh the app state and make the delete option work again.
When Instagram May Not Let You Delete It
There are a few situations where you may still have trouble even after trying the common fixes:
- The Story was already deleted but still appears due to a display delay.
- The Story is part of a Highlight, Draft, or archived set that needs separate editing.
- Instagram is temporarily down or experiencing an account-side issue.
- Your app cache or device state is causing the delete request to fail repeatedly.
If Nothing Works
If you still cannot delete the Story, try removing it from every place it may exist: the live Story, Story Archive, and any Highlights. If the app continues to refuse the action, wait a little and try again later, since some issues are temporary. For persistent account-specific problems, use Instagram’s Help section inside the app to report the problem.
A Quick Way to Decide What to Delete
- If the Story is still live, delete it from the Story menu.
- If it has expired, delete it from Archive.
- If it was saved to a Highlight, remove it from the Highlight.
- If the delete option is missing, update the app and check whether you are in the correct section.
