If your iPhone Mail app shows “This Message Has Not Been Downloaded From the Server,” the email is usually still tied to the mail server, but your phone cannot retrieve the full message. The problem can happen with IMAP accounts, flaky internet connections, sync settings, or a message that was removed from the server before your iPhone could fetch it.
The good news is that this error is often easy to fix. In many cases, you can get the message to appear by forcing a fresh sync, checking the connection, or adjusting the mail account settings.
Why This Error Appears on iPhone
This message usually means the Mail app knows an email exists, but it cannot download the full content from the server at that moment. That can happen if the server is temporarily unreachable, the account is not syncing correctly, or the email was deleted or moved before your phone tried to load it.
1. Check Your Internet Connection and Refresh Mail
The simplest cause is a weak or interrupted connection. Mail may show the error if the message body has not finished loading from the server.
- Open Safari and load a webpage to confirm that your iPhone has a working internet connection.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, try turning Wi-Fi off and on again, or switch temporarily to mobile data.
- Open the Mail app and pull down on the inbox to force a refresh.
- Tap the message again to see whether it downloads properly after the account resyncs.
2. Remove and Re-add the Mail Account
If the account is out of sync, removing and adding it again can clear a stuck connection between your iPhone and the mail server. This is often effective when multiple messages are affected or when the account has stopped behaving normally.
- Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
- Select the affected account.
- Tap Delete Account and confirm.
- Return to Settings > Mail > Accounts and tap Add Account.
- Sign in again and let the mailbox resync.
3. Make Sure Mail Can Fetch New Data
Sometimes the Mail app is not set to update often enough, or it is configured in a way that delays server sync. Checking fetch and push settings can help the app stay connected to the mailbox.
- Open Settings > Mail > Accounts > Fetch New Data.
- If Push is available for your account, make sure it is enabled if you want instant delivery.
- If Push is not available, choose a shorter Fetch schedule such as every 15 minutes or hourly.
- Open the Mail app again and test the message after the account has had time to sync.
4. Check Whether the Message Still Exists on the Server
If the email was deleted, moved, or never fully delivered to the mailbox, your iPhone cannot download it. This is more likely when the message came from an IMAP account and you are viewing it on multiple devices.
- Log in to the same email account using a web browser on another device.
- Search for the message by sender, subject, or date.
- Check the Trash, Archive, Spam, and other folders.
- If you find the email elsewhere, move it back to the inbox and open it again on your iPhone.
If the message is missing everywhere, the original sender may need to resend it.
Other Things Worth Checking
- Make sure iPhone Low Data Mode is not interfering with mail sync on cellular or Wi-Fi.
- Check that Mail has permission to use cellular data if you are away from Wi-Fi.
- Update iOS if your phone has a pending system update, since Mail bugs are sometimes fixed in later versions.
- If the problem only happens in one account, compare it with another mail account to see whether the issue is account-specific.
How to Tell Which Fix Is Most Likely
If the error appears on several emails at once, start with the connection check and account refresh. If it affects only one message, the email may have been moved or removed from the server. If the account has been unreliable for a while, removing and re-adding it is usually the most effective next step.
When You May Need Help From Your Email Provider
If none of the fixes work and the message still will not download in webmail or on another device, the issue may be on the mail provider’s side. Server outages, mailbox corruption, storage limits, or account restrictions can all prevent a message from loading properly.
In that case, contact your email provider or your organization’s IT support and explain that the message is visible but cannot be downloaded from the server on your iPhone.
