Gmail’s star system is a simple way to mark emails you want to come back to later. You can use a single yellow star, or switch to additional star icons if you want more than one kind of reminder.

This guide shows how to add stars, choose which star types are available, and use starred messages to keep your inbox easier to manage.

Using Stars to Organize Emails in Gmail

How Gmail Stars Work

A star does not archive, delete, or move a message. It simply adds a visible marker so the email is easier to spot in your inbox, starred view, or search results.

Key Fact Starring an email is separate from marking it as important. Gmail uses stars as a manual way for you to flag messages, while importance is determined by Gmail’s own sorting signals.
Why It Matters Stars are useful when you want a message to stand out without creating folders or labels. They work well for follow-ups, receipts, travel details, work approvals, and anything you do not want to lose in a crowded inbox.

How to Star an Email in Gmail

  1. Open Gmail in a web browser or the Gmail app.
  2. Find the email you want to save for later.
  3. Click or tap the star icon next to the message.
  4. The star changes color or style to show that it has been marked.

If you use Gmail on the web, the star usually appears beside the sender or subject line. In the mobile app, it appears in the message list and inside the open message view.

Quick Tip If you frequently star emails, try starring them directly from the inbox instead of opening each message first. It saves time and keeps your workflow faster.

Find All Starred Emails

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. In the left sidebar, look for Starred and click it.
  3. Gmail will show only the messages you have marked with stars.

If you do not see Starred in the sidebar, click More to expand the list of mailbox views.

Note In the Gmail app, you may need to use search or the menu options depending on your device layout, since mobile navigation can vary a little.

Use More Than One Star Type

Gmail can support several star styles, not just the default yellow star. This is useful if you want to separate emails into different priorities or reminders.

  1. Open Gmail on a desktop browser.
  2. Click the gear icon and choose See all settings.
  3. On the General tab, scroll to Stars.
  4. Drag the star icons you want to use into the In use section.
  5. Save changes at the bottom of the page.

After that, clicking the star next to a message will cycle through the star types you enabled. You can use different symbols to represent different tasks or levels of urgency.

Best For People who use Gmail as a lightweight task tracker and want a simple visual system for follow-up, priority, or waiting-on replies.

Search for Starred Mail

You can also find starred emails by searching. This is helpful when you remember the message was flagged but not where it is in your inbox.

Warning If you use multiple star types, Gmail still treats them as starred mail in search results. The search may not separate one star color from another unless you build a more specific workflow around labels or categories.

Good Ways to Use Stars

A star works best when you use it consistently. If you star too many messages, the system stops being useful. Try reserving stars for emails that truly need attention later.

When Stars Are Not Enough

Stars are quick and simple, but they are not a full organization system. If you need long-term sorting, use labels, filters, categories, or priority inbox settings instead.

Note A good approach is to use stars for temporary follow-up and labels for ongoing organization.

A Simple Star Workflow That Works

  1. Star messages that need action later.
  2. Review your Starred view once or twice a day.
  3. Unstar the message after you reply, file it, or finish the task.
  4. Use labels for anything you need to keep organized over the long term.
