If Facebook Messenger opens but the camera screen stays black, crashes, or refuses to take photos, the problem is usually caused by a permission issue, a temporary app glitch, or a conflict with your phone’s camera settings. The good news is that most Messenger camera problems can be fixed without resetting your device.
The three fixes below cover the most common causes on both Android and iPhone, and they work whether the camera will not open at all or Messenger can open the camera but will not capture or send a photo.
1. Check Messenger’s camera permission
Messenger cannot use your front or rear camera if the app does not have the right permission. This is one of the most common reasons the camera appears to fail on both Android and iPhone.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Find Messenger in your app list.
- Open the app’s permissions or privacy settings.
- Make sure Camera access is allowed.
- If you also want to send camera photos from within chats, make sure Photos or Files access is enabled too.
On Android, the permission may appear under Apps, App permissions, or Permissions, depending on your phone model. On iPhone, look under Settings > Messenger.
2. Force close Messenger and clear a temporary app glitch
If permissions are already correct, the app itself may be stuck. Messenger can sometimes load a broken camera session after an update, a failed permission request, or a temporary background process problem.
- Close Messenger completely so it is not running in the background.
- Reopen the app and try the camera again.
- If that does not work, force close Messenger from your phone’s app switcher or app settings.
- On Android, you can also clear the app cache from the app info screen.
- On iPhone, the equivalent fix is usually to close the app fully and reopen it, since iOS does not offer a standard app cache clear for Messenger.
If the camera works after reopening the app, the issue was likely temporary. If it still fails, the next most effective step is updating the app.
3. Update Messenger and check the phone’s camera access settings
An outdated version of Messenger can lose compatibility with newer Android or iPhone system updates. If the app has not been updated recently, the camera feature may stop working correctly.
- Open the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Search for Messenger.
- Install any available update.
- After updating, reopen Messenger and test the camera again.
- If the problem continues, check whether another app is already using the camera, such as Instagram, Zoom, Snapchat, or your phone’s built-in camera app.
Some phones also have a system-level camera privacy switch or permission control that can block all apps, not just Messenger. If the camera does not work in other apps either, the problem is probably at the device level rather than inside Messenger.
How to narrow down the cause quickly
A few simple checks can tell you whether the problem is with Messenger itself or with the phone:
- If the camera works in the normal camera app but not in Messenger, the issue is likely Messenger permissions or a Messenger app glitch.
- If the camera fails in every app, the issue is probably with the phone’s camera settings, system permissions, or hardware.
- If Messenger only fails on Wi-Fi or only on mobile data, try a different network, since some camera features and media uploads can be affected by poor connectivity.
What to try if Messenger still will not use the camera
If the three fixes above do not solve the issue, the next most useful steps are reinstalling Messenger, checking for OS updates, and testing the camera in another app. Those steps are especially helpful if the problem started right after a phone update or an app update.
- Reinstall Messenger if the app appears corrupted.
- Update Android or iOS if a system bug is affecting camera access.
- Test the front and rear cameras in another app to rule out a hardware problem.
- If the camera works elsewhere but not in Messenger, report the issue through Messenger’s help or feedback options.
