Your Android security patch level tells you how recently your phone or tablet received important security fixes. It is a quick way to check whether your device is up to date and protected against known vulnerabilities.

The exact menu names can vary a little by phone brand and Android version, but the process is usually very similar.

How to Find Your Android Security Patch Level in 3 Quick Steps

Step 1: Open your device settings

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android device.
  2. Scroll down and tap About phone, About device, or System, depending on your phone model.
  3. If you see a separate Software information or Android version menu, open that instead.
Note On some Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and other devices, the security patch date is grouped with software details rather than shown on the main Settings screen.

Step 2: Find the security patch level

  1. Look for Security patch level, Android security patch level, or a similar label.
  2. Read the date shown next to it.
  3. That date is the security patch level currently installed on your device.
Key Fact The security patch level is usually shown as a month and year, such as March 5, 2025, not as a version number.

Step 3: Compare it with the latest available update

Once you have the date, compare it with the latest security update published for your device or listed in its system update screen. If your patch level is older than the newest available update, your phone may still need to install pending security fixes.

Why It Matters Security patches fix flaws that attackers can use to gain access to your device, data, or apps. Checking the patch level helps you tell the difference between a device that is fully updated and one that only looks current.

What to do if the patch level is old

  1. Open Settings and check for System update, Software update, or Download and install.
  2. Install any available updates over a stable Wi-Fi connection.
  3. If no update appears, check again after a few days, since some updates are rolled out in stages.
  4. If your device is very old, look up the manufacturer’s update policy to see whether security support has ended.
Warning Do not assume your phone is fully protected just because apps are up to date. Android security patch levels are separate from app updates and can still leave the system exposed if they are outdated.
Best For Anyone who wants a fast check on whether their Android phone or tablet is still receiving important security fixes.

If you cannot find the patch level

Some Android skins hide this information in different places. Try searching within Settings for security patch, software information, or Android version. If that still does not help, your device manual or support page may show the exact menu path for your model.

Quick Tip If you are checking a family member’s phone, take a screenshot of the security patch level so you can compare it later after an update.
